History

The foundation of Goygol, the centre of the district, was laid on 22 August 1819 by German colonists who had arrived from the Principality of Württemberg in Germany. The settlement was named Helenendorf. At first 56 families lived in Helenendorf. Houses in the German architectural style were built in this picturesque place, six streets were laid out, and a general education school, a kindergarten and a music school operated there. The main building of the present-day Agro-Industrial Complex was constructed by the Forer brothers, who produced wine and brandy there. The brandy and beer made in Helenendorf became known worldwide and were exported to many foreign countries.
On 8 August 1930 the Narimanov District was established with Helenendorf as its centre. On 28 February 1992 the territory of the district was divided into two parts and Samukh District was created. On 29 November 1938 Narimanov District was renamed Khanlar District and the settlement of Yelenendorf became the city of Khanlar. By Decree No. 2801 of 7 May 2008 signed by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Khanlar District was renamed Goygol District and the district centre, the city of Khanlar, was renamed the city of Goygol.
